Western Missouri & Kansas Affiliate Award for Aspirations in Computing Ceremony
Friday, February 7th, the Western Missouri and Kansas Aspirations Community celebrated 30 young women at the 2014 Award for Aspirations in Computing ceremony held at the Cerner Corporation in Kansas City. In excellent celebration, parents, teachers, industry professionals, and faculty were all on hand to help honor these young women for their accomplishments and aspirations in computing and technology. The event began with warm welcomes from committee members and an engaging panel discussion on "The Pursuit of Computing," which included candid insights from college and professional women. Panelists offered sincere, open discussion about their uncertainties in choosing the field of computing and their limited access to female role models or mentors. They were also able to share with awardees their own personal interests and journeys that eventually led them to the exciting and unique opportunities they were currently enjoying in their academic and professional computing careers!
The Keynote speaker, Josepha Haden Chomphosy, a marketing analyst at MMGY Global, gave an animated talk where she referred to herself as an "internet anthropologist" and described her complete career transition into computing as well as her absolute love for her work. Josepha’s talk was engaging and impassioned! She was able to connect with the girls and offer inspiring insights into the many possibilities awaiting them in the field of computing. Joespha spoke to the awardees about heroes, how to discover them, as well as being open to transition and new opportunities.
Sponsors and community partners read the winners’ bios and presented the young women with awards, prizes, and swag bags. As the bios were read, it was incredible to hear about all the accomplishments each of these girls had already achieved! Following the ceremony was a dessert reception hosted by Cerner where attendees had opportunities to network while also learning about the Sit With Me initiative and enjoying Red Chair photo sessions. Congratulations to the 2014 Western Missouri and Kansas Affiliate awardees!
“The NCWIT awards ceremony was an amazing experience. I have never been to an awards ceremony for anything before so it was awesome to just be there! But everyone was kind and entertaining, and I enjoyed every bit of it. The keynote speaker and the panel were inspiring and answered a lot of my questions. Everyone was treated fairly and I felt like a winner even though I wasn't. It was a great ceremony, and I was honored to be part of it.”
